Stamp No. 56Lisa Congdon

We’ve been having a lot of fun collaborating with Lisa Congdon this year on a series of stamps for her shop and invited her to make one for our artist series. Lisa is an internationally known fine artist, illustrator and writer. She makes art for clients around the globe and is the author of a dozen books.

Have you designed a stamp before?

Yes! We have been working with The Portland Stamp Company for the past nine months to create a monthly poster stamp series that we sell in our shops. I’ve also designed two stamps for the USPS!

What was the most interesting or fun aspect of designing a poster stamp? What unique challenges did it present?

Since I design them regularly now, I’ve gotten very used to the process. Even when I am not designing a poster stamp, a lot of my work ends up in the form of arrangements of things. Often I use an imaginary grid when I create my “arrangements”, so the transition to designing for a stamp was pretty natural for me. The most challenging thing for me is making sure I have enough of a margin (space) for the perforation!

Tell us about the art. Did you create something new for this stamp?

For this poster stamp, I used a design I created back in 2016 before the election to encourage people to vote. We’ve now brought it back for both elections since then, first as buttons, then as stickers, and now as a poster stamp in collaboration with The Portland Stamp Company. I’m excited to see it in this form!

Anything else?

All proceeds from these will be donated to the ACLU.

The Artist Series

An ongoing collaboration with invited designers, artists, and writers who create original work for an unusual form: the poster stamp. The stamps are printed on lickable, gummed paper and pinhole perforated by hand on our vintage machines. The sheets are signed and numbered by the artist, and released in editions of 100. Suitable for framing. View full series.

Upcoming releases include Pablo Medina,  Erin Jhi, and Neville Brody
