Stamp No. 60Lena Jacobs

Lena Jacobs is an illustrator and author based in Darmstadt, Germany. We found each other somehow on Instagram – thanks algorithm! Our ensuing conversation led to the creation of this special holiday Artist Series stamp sheet.

Have you designed a stamp before?

This is my first time designing a stamp, and it means a great deal to me to have my illustration included in the Artist Series.

What was the most interesting or fun aspect of designing a poster stamp? What unique challenges did it present?

Seeing my peace dove as part of this stamp design was especially important to me, given the times we live in. I wanted it to stand out while still maintaining balance with the other design elements. That meant a lot of trial and error until I was happy with the composition.

Tell us about the art. Did you create something new for the stamp?

I originally designed the peace dove for #makeartnotwar. To create something new for this stamp, Josh and Niko came up with the idea of sending peace and hope through the mail for the holiday season. I loved their feedback and illustrated a dove carrying a letter in its beak, along with new hand lettering and decorative elements specifically for this concept.

Thank you to the Portland Stamp Company for giving me this amazing opportunity.

Anything else?

Peace, hope and love!

Lena also wrote an essay on her Substack about this project.
